Everything Pirate!!!
Peter and the Starcatchers…
All I can say is wow!! This book is amazing! I loved it! it took a few chapters to catch me but once I was caught I could literally not put the book down! I finished it last weekend when I was very sick. I did not want to do anything but lay in the bed with my book, so that is exactly what I did! Boy am I glad because it was so wonderful! I cannot wait to buy the other ones because I know they will be just as good! I am already trying to figure out what will happen in those books!

Double Entry Diary & Section IV
What if you Met a Pirate?
This book is a great book that goes into great detail about the characteristics of pirates. I love learning about pirates and their lives, but defiantly don’t want to be one! The book has great kid friendly definitions and wording so they would understand. It is also wrote in a great way so the kids could read a page or two at a time, but they will not feel pressured to read the whole book at one time. I feel like this book would be one that the students would use as a resource for the students to use as they are doing research and completing their assignments. I really liked learning that there were different types of pirate ships. I had no idea that no one ever had to walk the plank! That’s one story that has been stretched really far!!! I think that all my pirate questions have finally been answered.
Pirate Diary: The Journal of Jake Carpenter
This book really gives you a detailed look at how it would be to be a pirate! I could not believe the detail it went into. I am also very aware of the fact that I do not want to be a pirate. Wow, what a rough life. I think that it is very funny that Jake was going to be a doctor, then all of a sudden he is off to see the world on a ship. Jake’s life on the ship was very rough. I do not know how he made it home safely! I was very excited to see at the end uncle Will was alive. That part of the book had really bothered me until the end. It would be very important to discuss the book as the students read it to make sure the students understand and are not bothered by the events in the story. I am a very sensitive, empathetic person and some of the events in the book bothered me. I know that my students would love the book and would enjoy the information in it.
Not So Jolly Roger
I really enjoyed reading the Not So Jolly Roger. It was a great book for students to read. It was comical but gave you a great view of the rough life of a pirate. I could see how the students would be interested in this book and this study. I could not put the book down. It did not take very long to read because it is so short. The pictures really help the reader understand the story. There were new terms that the students would not know. This would be a good learning opportunity for the students to learn how to use context clues to figure out the meaning of a word or how to use a dictionary. I can’t wait to explore the other books.
By creating the Chart about certain pirates, I learn information I did not know. I learned about specific pirates and how they lived. It is a great way to let students learn on their own but monitor what they learn. Keeping them on 2 or 3 sites is great. I love how the teacher has pre-selected the sites so that he or she knows what is on there. It is also fun to see how different sites represent the same information. The information I saw was basically the same but constructed in a different way.
With a unit like this one the students are allowed to do most of the work by themselves. They can go at their own rate and still be successful. This is very important. All students succeed! I love that! Everyone is on a similar level!
I am so excited to start the Pirate Unit!!!!
3 Pirate Articles for 9-23-09
I loved reading the articles. There are many great ideas in each one. They do have some of the same information so if you do not get it in one article, you have a chance to get it in the next. There are samples and ideas that any teacher would be able to use. The students will stay interested and involved in any type of unit created this way. I am not so crazy about teaching pirates though. Not exactly in my interest range but I do know the students would be interested so it may be something I would teach. Using notebooks and teaching students how to organize their information is great. This is something important to teach and they would be taught in a fun way.
