POETRY!!!

I am Blackbeard.
I am disgustingly fiery and cruel.
I wonder how my passengers feel when they know Blackbeard is near.
I watch the sun rise on the heartless horizon each day.
I hear the cry of the ocean each day as I sail to my next victim.
I want all the gold and jewels of the world and I will have what I want.
I worry about nothing because I am Blackbeard, most feared pirate of the sea.
I am disgustingly fiery and cruel.
I pretend to be aware of my crew’s needs and wants, but really I do not care.
I wonder how my passengers feel when they know Blackbeard is near.
I feel like I am the king of pirates and loyal to my father, the Devil.
I touch the lives of so many in ways no one can imagine.
I laugh when someone tries to take my treasure because no one can defeat Blackbeard.
I am disgustingly fiery and cruel.
I understand that I am evil and nasty in every way.
I say that I will be evil all the days of my life because that is the way of a pirate.
I dream of having all the treasure in the world so that I can support my 14 wives.
I try to capture every ship that is out to sea because I know I am the most feared pirate.
I hope other ships will have fear in their hearts when they see the Queen Anne’s Revenge on the horizon.
I am disgustingly fiery and cruel.

I can't live without my hair dryer!!!
Plum
Inspired by William Carlos Williams
So much depends upon
my silvery, plum
hair dryer
with its long, black cord
plugged in
and the diffuser attached
ready to style
at early dawn.

Debo my best friend!
Best Friend
The best friend I ever had
was a soft cuddly
three foot tall
gray
HIPPOPOTUMUS .
His name is
Debo
After a childhood crush
And he will listen until
you can’t
talk anymore.
He has many secrets
that no one else knows
and
he is not telling.
He will
remain my friend
until the end.
I am from a Great Place
(written Spring 2009)
I am from two loving parents, high school
sweethearts, who will be together forever.
I am from a childhood of Goodnight Moon,
apple juice, and smiley face pancakes.
I am from a childhood of following in daddy’s footsteps,
cooking with mom, and taking care of my many pets.
I am from a small town where everybody knows everybody,
we watch out for each other, and keep each other safe.
I am from a small school where the teachers care,
are compassionate, and everyone knows your name.
I am from teenage years full of great friendships,
broken hearts, and football Friday nights.
I am from a great place, a great family,
where I feel safe, and can live a life full of joy.
Poetry Response:
All the Small Poems and 14 More

I love these poems because they are short and easy to read. Students would be able to read them and understand them because they seem to be written with students in mind. The meanings are not hard to figure out so students would be able to analyze them without to much trouble. The students could use these poems to help create a poem of their own. The poems are written in random formats. They do not seem to have a similar structure. A couple I read were Sun, Turtle, Pumpkin, and Kitten. I read many more but these were some of my favorites. The Pumpkin poem had great wording and creative writing in it. I love the line “Vegetable Skull.” I think that is great. These poems teach you to be creative and use fun wording.
Brown Angels
I liked these poems but I loved the pictures. I think it is neat to see how the author can use the pictures to create poems about. They seem very in depth and make you think about the pictures he has written about. I wondered if the names he used were on the pictures or if he made them all up. A couple poems I liked were Pretty Little Black Girl, Summer, and Love that Boy. These were fun to read and think about.
Love that Dog
I love Jack! He is such a fun little boy! It is great to see how his writing develops throughout the book. The poems the teacher used to help him were great. They really got him to think about what he could write about and why the authors wrote their poems. The poet that inspired Jack the most was Walter Dean Myers. I loved that Mr. Myers could come to the school so that Jack could show him his poem. It really meant the world to Jack, which is funny considering “boys don’t write poems.”
Reading these poems were great! I love seeing the poems that I can use with my students. I really think students would love reading these and writing poetry.
The class discussion was great! It is so fun to see how everyones poem choices were different and how each person has different opinions about poetry. I also loved learning how to teach poetry. I can’t wait to try that in a classroom. I do have to admit that poetry is not my favorite but that is only because it was not taught in a fun and creative way!

Beautiful, Amanda! What a great idea to include your “Where I’m From” poem here. You have really captured these items and done such a great job with all of your writing!

I like the phrase “silvery, plum hair dryer.” Isn’t it amazing how we can make the ordinary seem extraordinary?

Amanda…what a great idea to add our “Where I’m From” poems to our poetry page…if you don’t mind, I think I’ll follow your lead (imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?). I loved your poem about your hippo. There’s something about childhood comforts that never really seem to fade. your poem tells me everything I need to know about how you feel about Debo!

Amanda Jo… I love your best friend poem! That is so a poem that I can relate to with my own “best friend animals.” I also really love the part about listening until you can talk no more!
